Dr. John has died. The New Orleans music icon, born Mac Rebennack in 1941, passed away today from a heart attack. He was 77.
Beloved for his gravely voice, voodoo aesthetic and unique sound, which mixed blues, jazz, boogie woogie, rock and R&B into a spicy gumbo all his own, albums like Gris-Gris and hits like “Right Place, Wrong Time” helped earn the good doctor six Grammys and an induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Rest in peace, Doc. And thanks for the funky tunes.
